Why join a Dogfit canicross class?

Posted by Gail Walker, 20th June 2015

The great thing about our Dogfit Trainers is that, along with their knowledge of Canicross and love for dogs and exercise, they each offer something unique through their classes; whether it’s experience in dog training and behaviour modification, qualifications and experience in personal training or a few years’ experience in Canicross.

Customers don’t just get an exercise class, they get added value from our sessions.

Natalie and Gareth, from K9 Development Centre are Dogfit Certified Trainers and they told us why their business complements Dogfit and how getting fit with your dog is such a great thing to do, both physically and mentally…

1. Why is Dogfit such a good idea?

Exercise is a very important part of a dog’s daily routine for a number of reasons. Firstly, it helps rehabilitate dogs by channeling their excess energy into a productive outlet. Additionally, a dog can get bored easily and exercise acts as a solution by fulfilling many of its wants and needs. If your dog is exercised effectively, the results will reflect this.

Canicross, agility and structured walks are all offered by K9DC. These are key examples of ways to ensure dogs are stimulated – both physically and mentally. All of the above activities are carried out with the owners and so they can feel the benefits too!

2. What do you offer clients coming to you through Dogfit?

We offer a wide range of services that cater to each and every dog’s and owner’s individual needs. Both of you can be complete beginners looking for a fun, friendly and social environment to exercise in. But equally, if you are already active individuals looking to try out something new and exciting, we can help!

We have a large amount of experience in canine behaviour modification and training, along with crucial knowledge and understanding of a variety of dog breeds. We are able to advise the best route for you and your dog and are on hand to keep all classes under control.

One to one sessions can be arranged if a dog has any form of behavioural issue which deem it unsuitable for a group environment at first. Once we have worked through this with the dog we would then gradually introduce them to our group sessions.

3. Who are these classes are suited for/why should someone consider giving it a go?

Our services welcome anyone who is looking for a new and fun way to exercise with their canine companions. If you’re looking to drain your dogs energy levels and ensure they stay healthy and happy, these are the classes for you!

Any level of fitness, breed, size and energy are welcome. We ensure everyone is catered for and comfortable. There’s no harm in trying, it may turn out to be something you both love!

4. What do you personally get out of running Dogfit classes?

It is such a joy to meet new people and dogs, experience everyone having fun and most importantly enjoying exercising together. It’s great to see the dogs gaining the benefits of exercise whilst building a stronger bond with their owners and socialising with dogs around them.

Everything the classes provide are very rewarding for everybody present, including us! By the end of a session owners are feeling positive and the dogs are successfully both physically and mentally stimulated.

We have a real passion in what we do and it is so satisfying to be able to help dogs and their owners find activities and sports to engage in together, ensuring the relationship between one another is solidified for life.

5. What advice would you give somebody thinking about joining a Dogfit class but is worried about whether they are fit enough?

There is absolutely no need to feel intimidated or nervous as we have sessions available that cater for beginners and people that haven’t experienced running before. You won’t be alone as everybody is in the same boat and we have programmes designed to help build levels of fitness/distance/speed and confidence up gradually over the course of a few weeks.

We ensure everybody feels comfortable and enjoys the experience – we can take it easy and never push anyone too far or too fast. We want to make sure our classes are as fun as they are beneficial!

6. What would you say to someone who already runs but hasn’t ever given Canicross a go?

From personal experience we have found that exercising with your dog(s) is a fantastic way to stay motivated, get fit and have a lot more fun than you would running alone. For that reason alone we would recommend trying out a session with us at least once!

It really does transform the entire experience, making it far more enjoyable and aids the sport in becoming more social as you are able to interact with people that have similar interests to you.

7. What do you personally bring to the classes you run?

Specialising in canine behaviour modification certainly helps us to add our own personal touch to the classes we offer. We are able to incorporate dog training into the classes and ensure the best help and specific advice is provided for you and your dog.

We are trained in canine first aid and are fully insured to carry out all of our fitness related sessions. We bring the assurance that both you and your dog are in a safe, controlled and positive environment.

8. What are the main benefits of getting fit with your dog?

As you’ve probably gathered, there is an entire spectrum of benefits keeping fit with your dog provides. One that we see regularly is the unbreakable bond that is formed when carrying out such activities with one another. Dogs are a great support system when it comes to exercise; they never let you down and you can work with each other whilst enjoying every second. It must of course also be mentioned the vast amount of health benefits keeping fit provides (longer lifespan, joint and liver disease prevention, etc).

Dogfit classes offer a fun, social & rewarding experience – for you & your dog.

9. What is the best thing about your job?

Giving dogs the chance to experience everything they should in a positive way. By changing and improving their overall behaviour and lifestyle for the better, we are also improving the relationship they have with their owners. Seeing how happy dogs and owners can become with one another after previous problems is wonderful. The more partnerships we help and save, the better.

10. What results are you seeing from dogs where their exercise needs are being met?

When a dog has received the essential exercise, training and love that they require, they transform. Dogs are so much happier, more relaxed and less likely to create or develop problems when their needs are met by their owners.

They don’t ask for much, however when they receive the essentials, their behaviour and bond to us in return is like no other.

Natalie and Gareth are the owners of K9 Development Centre and offer Dogfit classes in the Guildford and Cranleigh areas.
