Running downhill with your dog needn’t be a daunting prospect. Here are our top tips for mastering this essential Canicross skill…
1.First, decide on a simple command and stick to it. Whether that’s “heel”, “with me”, “back” or “behind” for example – consistency is key!
2. Find a flat off-road area without distractions. Walk or jog with your dog attached and ideally out front, then pull the line in close to your side whilst using your command, rewarding your dog with a verbal cue or treat as they step in line by your side
3. Repeat step 2 until your dog instinctively walks/trots by your side when you use the command without you needing to pull hard on the line – you may need to lightly pull in the line towards your side to encourage your dog, or simply to pick up any slack in the line
4. Stick to a flat area but this time build up to running – again, use the same command and reward your dog for demonstrating the desired behaviour
5. Find a hill with a low decline and repeat the above steps until you are confident your dog will run by your side
6. Gradually build up to a steeper decline and hey presto you are running downhill, confidently and with your knees intact!
Happy Canicrossing 🙂
