This year marks DogFit’s 10th anniversary, and with it we’re celebrating one of the most heartfelt and inspiring parts of our journey – our My Story series. Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of sharing powerful, personal accounts from members of our community whose lives have been transformed by Canicross. Each story is unique, but all are united by a common thread: the bond between human and dog, and the strength found in getting fitter together.
To mark this milestone, each month we’ve been revisiting one of these incredible stories. We reflect on the impact it had, what it represents to us as a Canicross community, and invite you to re-read the original article. Whether you’re new to DogFit or have been with us from the start, we hope these stories continue to inspire and remind you of the power of putting one foot – and paw – in front of the other.
Barrie – From War Dog to Canicross Star
Sean Laidlaw’s story with Barrie begins in the most extraordinary of places: a war zone in Syria. While working as a bomb disposal expert, Sean discovered a terrified, abandoned puppy among the rubble – the sole survivor of her litter. Patiently gaining her trust with food, safety, and kindness, he formed an unshakeable bond with the little dog who would later be known worldwide as Barrie.
When Sean was forced to return to the UK, leaving Barrie behind was heartbreaking, but he vowed to bring her home. With the help of the charity War Paws and months of complex planning, the pair were finally reunited in an emotional moment captured across global news – a journey that spanned five countries, two war zones, and thousands of miles.

Settling into life in the UK, Barrie proved to be a high-energy young dog who needed more than long walks to thrive. That’s when Sean discovered Canicross, and everything changed. Running together gave Barrie the physical and mental stimulation she craved, and it gave Sean a powerful outlet too – one that supported his mental health and helped him manage PTSD. Canicross strengthened their bond, gave them shared purpose, and even led them to taking part in events, including winning their category in a 15km race. Today, Sean and Barrie are passionate advocates for the joy and wellbeing that Canicross brings, showing how the sport can transform both human and canine lives.
